OJJDP Discretionary Grant Programs

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP) discretionary grants awarded between fiscal year (FY) 1993 and FY 1995. GAO found that: (1) OJJDP awarded 162 new grants that funded research on juvenile justice issues, delinquency prevention, treatment, and intervention projects, and practitioner training and technical assistance; (2) colleges and universities, state and local governments, and nonprofit organizations were the primary grant recipients; (3) the grant programs ranged from 1 to 9 years in anticipated length, with the average grant lasting for 2 years; and (4) grant amounts ranged from $31,448 to $3.1 million.
