Review of the Department of State's Computer Operations

Gao ID: 108721 February 27, 1979

A limited review of the Department of State's computer operations was made.

The large number of operational systems or subsystems and the development of more such systems suggests that an analysis is needed to eliminate systems duplication and proliferation. GAO has advocated for a number of years a merger of the data processing facilites of the State Department, Agency for International Development, and the International Communications Agency, for more economical and effective use of computer hardware without unnecessary proliferation. Based on the review, it is now suggested that top level management of the respective agencies move ahead with the merger, starting with the computer hardware.
