Issues Affecting Continuation of United States Funding of the Gorgas Memorial Institute

Gao ID: NSIAD-83-38 September 12, 1983

GAO reviewed U.S. funding of the Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical and Preventive Medicine, Inc., and its biomedical research arm, the Gorgas Memorial Laboratory in Panama.

GAO found that: (1) Gorgas has made little effort to broaden its financial base of support; (2) similar research is being conducted by other Government agencies; (3) there is no formalized pre- or post-project scientific review by Gorgas; and (4) closing Gorgas could have a negative impact on U.S. foreign policy initiatives in the region. GAO believes that there is a need for a formalized planning and review process to allow for better use of laboratory facilities and personnel.
