Government Vehicles
Officials Now Rarely Receive Unauthorized Home-to-work Transportation Gao ID: GGD-91-27 March 15, 1991Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on 16 federal agencies' compliance with statutory restrictions on high-level officials' use of government vehicles for home-to-work transportation.
GAO found that: (1) agencies generally complied with the restrictions on home-to-work transportation; (2) 29 of the 61 officials who were provided such transportation were authorized by law; (3) there was only one instance where an authorized official was provided with a government owned or leased vehicle with driver for routine home-to-work transportation; (4) four drivers of officials authorized to receive home-to-work transportation routinely took the cars home with them and kept them overnight; (5) 24 officials in 9 of the agencies occasionally received unauthorized transportation; (6) while all agencies maintained the required vehicle logs or other records, the extent of documentation varied; and (7) 10 of the 13 agencies did not comply with the statutory requirements to notify Congress of such authorizations.
