Cost of Assistance and Sales Programs

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided cost data and other information on selected international assistance and military sales programs. GAO noted that: (1) Department of Defense programs include trade shows, education and training programs, military contact programs, foreign military sales and financing programs, and excess stock disposals and military drawdowns which range in cost from $95,000 to $775 million; (2) State Department programs include international narcotics control programs, antiterrorism assistance, international criminal justice assistance, and economic support programs which range in cost from $15,244 million to several billion dollars; and (3) the government waived the recovery of research and development costs on foreign military equipment sales in fiscal year 1994.
