The Bureau of Land Management's Efforts To Identify Land for Disposal

Gao ID: RCED-85-44 April 18, 1985

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reported on the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) process for identifying unused/underused and unneeded land.

GAO found that, although BLM had a reported 2.7 million acres of public land potentially available for sale in 1982, the process BLM used to identify the land generally did not meet the comprehensive planning requirements of federal land management law. BLM relied on management framework plans that usually did not discuss land sales, were several years old, and may have lacked timely public and state and local government input. GAO noted that BLM is currently taking steps that should improve its land-use planning for identifying and supporting the disposal of public land.
