Location and Cost Data for Recreational and Cultural Sites Gao ID: RCED-86-141FS April 25, 1986

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO presented: (1) an inventory of the recreational and cultural sites that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages; and (2) BLM state and district office budget information for the sites for fiscal years (FY) 1985 through 1987.

GAO found that: (1) it could not calculate the actual costs incurred in FY 1985 and the budget estimates for FY 1986 and 1987 for the various sites because BLM only maintains cost-data records by district; (2) there were 162 developed, 226 semideveloped, and 1,151 undeveloped recreational sites located in 50 BLM district offices in 11 states; (3) the management and maintenance costs related to these sites were about $10.6 million in FY 1985 and are estimated to be about $11 million and $10.3 million for FY 1986 and 1987, respectively; (4) there were 121 cultural sites in 48 BLM district offices in 11 states; and (5) management and maintenance costs related to these sites were about $4.3 million in FY 1985 and are estimated to be about $4.8 million and $4.2 million for FY 1986 and 1987, respectively.
