The Extent of Oil and Gas Activities on BLM and Forest Service Lands Gao ID: RCED-90-123FS April 11, 1990

GAO reviewed the extent of oil and gas leasing and development on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service lands.

GAO found that: (1) although some portion of most BLM and Forest Service lands have been leased, less than half of the leases have been drilled; (2) out of 141 BLM resource areas, 126 areas leased all or a portion of their lands, and 69 had producing or exploratory wells drilled; and (3) out of the 156 national forests, 113 leased all or a portion of their lands, and 46 had producing or exploratory wells drilled.
