Outages Reduce the Reliability of Hydroelectric Power Plants in the Southeast Gao ID: T-RCED-96-180 July 25, 1996

Over a large part of the country, hydroelectric plants run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Interior Department's Bureau of Reclamation generate electricity that is sold by the Energy Department's five power marketing administrations. This testimony discusses the extent to which (1) these power plants are experiencing outages and (2) the current planning and budgeting processes allow the Corps to perform timely and effective repairs and rehabilitations of these plants. GAO focuses on 11 of the Corps' 23 hydroelectric power plants that generate power marketed by the Southeastern Power Administration.
