Land Management Agencies' Wildfire Suppression Expenditures Gao ID: RCED-98-140R April 10, 1998

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on federal land management agencies' wildfire suppression expenditures, focusing on the: (1) total amount of money the land management agencies expended on federal wildfire suppression during fiscal years 1993 through 1997; and (2) major categories of wildfire suppression expenditures. GAO did not independently verify the financial data provided by land management agencies nor did it trace the data to the systems from which they came.

GAO noted that: (1) during fiscal years 1993 through 1997, the federal land management agencies expended about $2.3 billion on wildfire suppression; and (2) included in these expenditures was about $1.2 billion for services and supplies; $941 million for personnel costs; $74 million for travel; and $50 million for rents, communications and utilities.
