Support Costs and Other Information Gao ID: GGD-88-57FS March 3, 1988

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the costs of certain benefits and services provided to former U.S. presidents and their dependents.

GAO found that: (1) fiscal year (FY) 1987 costs totalled about $10.3 million, with about $9.2 million for Secret Service protection; (2) the Secret Service provided protection for two former presidents, their wives, and one presidential widow during FY 1987; (3) Congress eliminated funding for a townhouse set aside for the exclusive use of former presidents, since they all agreed to relinquish such use; and (4) former presidents incurred costs for personnel compensation and benefits, office rent, telephone service, supplies, and equipment.
