Tax Compliance Initiatives and Delinquent Taxes Gao ID: T-GGD-95-74 February 1, 1995

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) faces some formidable enforcement challenges, such as closing a tax gap that was last estimated at $127 billion in tax year 1992 and collecting tens of billions of dollars of tax debt. Congress recognizes these challenges, and every year but one since 1990 it has provided compliance initiatives that would add more staff. The goal is to increase compliance and generate more revenue. This testimony discusses IRS' compliance initiatives and its progress in collecting tax debts.
