GAO was requested to obtain financial and other data on General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler Corporation.

GAO compiled information from the currently available corporate 10-K and annual reports to stockholders for the years 1975 through 1979. The financial data include: (1) net income; (2) actual U.S. Federal tax payments and refunds; (3) annual amount of new investment; (4) compensation of top executives; and (5) costs of meeting Federal regulations for fuel efficiency, safety, pollution controls, plus legal costs and liabilities in dealing with the Federal Government. Other data include information on: (1) recalls; (2) import competition; and (3) more efficient automobiles, investment abroad, and changes in Federal legislation.
