Deferred Funds Made Available for Obligation

Gao ID: OGC-82-18 July 6, 1982

A deferral of budget authority provided for the Coast Guard's acquisition, construction, and improvement account was not reported to Congress as required by applicable legislation.

Under the legislation, funds can only be deferred for a 45-day period unless Congress approves the deferral. Since the statutory period expired without congressional action, the funds were required to be made available for obligation. GAO has been informed that the Office of Management and Budget has approved a Coast Guard plan to use the funds in fiscal year 1982 and that the Coast Guard is making the funds available for obligation in accordance with the plan.
