Information on Gander Crash and Improved Controls Over Military Charters Gao ID: NSIAD-90-243BR September 11, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the U.S. government's participation in the Canadian investigation of the 1985 aircraft crash in Newfoundland, focusing on: (1) U.S. agencies' roles in assisting the Canadian Aviation Safety Board in its investigation; (2) the plane's cargo; and (3) military actions to ensure U.S. military charter safety and security.

GAO found that: (1) several U.S. federal agencies were involved in helping the Canadian Safety Board with the crash investigation, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, and various military divisions; (2) the manifest indicated that explosives were not on the aircraft; and (3) the military improved its control and safety over military airlift charter aircraft and implemented most of the recommendations that GAO made in a 1987 report.
