Light Truck Average Fuel Economy Standard--Model Year 2000 Gao ID: OGC-98-42 April 17, 1998

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) new rule on light truck average fuel economy standard, model year 2000. GAO noted that: (1) the new rule would require the Secretary of Transportation to prescribe by regulation, at least 18 months in advance of each model year, average fuel economy standards; (2) the standard is to be the maximum feasible average fuel economy manufacturers can achieve in that model year; and (3) based on NHTSA's interpretation of the law, it complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
