Veterans Affairs Issues Gao ID: OCG-89-14TR November 1, 1988

GAO summarized information on federal government issues relating to veterans, including: (1) departmental management; (2) aging veterans' long-term health care needs; (3) disabled veterans' compensation schedules; and (4) management information systems.

GAO noted that the Veterans Administration (VA): (1) lacked a system to ensure that veterans received high-quality, appropriate services; (2) lacked a management information system for collecting the data necessary to plan for the long-term health care needs of the burgeoning population of disabled veterans; and (3) has not comprehensively updated its entire rating schedule for compensating disabled veterans since 1945. GAO believes that the new Department of Veterans' Affairs will need to improve the overall management of the medical and benefits programs in order to enhance the delivery of services to veterans.
