Compliance With Professional Standards by the VA Office of Inspector General Gao ID: AFMD-89-76 July 3, 1989

GAO reviewed the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Inspector General (OIG), focusing on whether OIG: (1) performed its work in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards; and (2) conducted investigations in accordance with professional standards.

GAO found that: (1) VA OIG satisfactorily complied with all professional audit and investigative standards; (2) OIG established effective quality controls to help ensure its compliance; (3) OIG clarified and strengthened its policies for quality control improvements in referencing and for following up on minor audit report findings; and (4) OIG coverage of VA operations, OIG semiannual reports, and the benefits that VA receives from OIG work will have a significant impact on VA operations.
