Hazardous Waste
Fort Benjamin Harrison's Compliance With Environmental Laws Gao ID: NSIAD-90-88 March 28, 1990Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information regarding the Army's compliance with environmental laws at Fort Benjamin Harrison, focusing on: (1) landfills leaching into groundwater; (2) air pollution systems for coal-fired boilers; (3) a hazardous waste storage site; and (4) a pesticide storage building.
GAO found that: (1) the Army corrected one landfill's erosion and soil cover problem; (2) since test results were inconclusive for the other landfill, the state would perform further testing for contaminants; (3) the Army phased out four coal-fired boilers and installed gas-fired boilers; (4) the Environmental Protection Agency cited the Army for noncompliance with hazardous waste laws; and (5) the Army evaluated and suggested upgrades to the pesticide storage site to reduce potential hazards.
