Superfund Pollution Claims

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on payments that insurance companies have made for Superfund claims, focusing on clean-up costs. GAO found that: (1) from 1982 to 1986, ten companies paid out about $11 million in indemnity claims; and (2) from 1987 to 1991, 13 companies paid out about $144 million, a substantial increase.
