Emission Standards for Locomotives and Locomotive Engines Gao ID: OGC-98-46 April 29, 1998

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new rule on emission standards for locomotives and locomotive engines. GAO noted that: (1) the rule would take effect in the year 2000 and will ultimately result in more than 60-percent reduction in oxides of nitrogen from locomotives; and (2) EPA complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
