Emission Standards for New Nonroad Spark-Ignition Handheld Engines At or Below 19 Kilowatts and Minor Amendments to Emission Requirements Gao ID: OGC-00-29 May 8, 2000

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) rule on emission standards for new nonroad spark-ignition handheld engines. GAO noted that: (1) the rule would control emissions from new nonroad spark-ignition handheld engines at or below 19 kilowatts, which are principally used in lawn and garden equipment; (2) the standards will result in an estimated 70 percent reduction of emissions of hydrocarbons plus oxides of nitrogen by year 2010; and (3) EPA complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
