Alterations and Improvements to Presidential Appointees' Offices Since January 1981

Gao ID: PLRD-82-117 August 23, 1982

GAO was asked to provide information on expenditures made subsequent to January 22, 1981, to remodel, alter, decorate, or repair the offices of Presidential appointees.

GAO found that the General Services Administration provided reimburseable work totaling approximately $68,000 to alter and improve the offices of 15 departmental Secretaries between January 22, 1981, and May 28, 1982. Agencies also obtain supplies and nonpersonal services from commercial sources to improve their offices. A review of expenditures for four Presidential appointees at the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development showed that these departments used their imprest funds and purchase orders to obtain various supplies and nonpersonal services from commercial vendors.
