Federal Judicial Space Follow-up

Gao ID: GGD-94-135R April 22, 1994

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO assessed the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts' (AOC) actions in addressing GAO recommendations regarding its long-range planning process and estimates of space needs. GAO noted that AOC: (1) is updating districts' long-range plans; (2) now provides the General Services Administration with detailed space requirements and an overall summary of needs; (3) adopted the statistical method that GAO used in its study, but has not yet evaluated alternative methods for projecting caseloads; (4) has eliminated some, but not all, subjectivity in selecting regression models for projecting caseloads; (5) has not changed its method for classifying districts into one of four growth models; and (6) is developing an automated system that it could use to improve its estimates of districts' space needs.
