Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) compatible computer procurements.

GAO found that: (1) from October 1986 through March 1989, 68 percent of NASA procurements for mainframes and mainframe peripherals required some type of compatibility; (2) NASA required compatibility with one manufacturer's equipment in 76 percent of its compatible procurements; (3) in 71 percent of compatible procurements, NASA procured that manufacturer's equipment; and (4) overall, NASA procured more of that manufacturer's mainframes and mainframe peripherals than any other manufacturer's.
