Request for Information Relating to Report on Nuclear Diversion in the United States

Gao ID: EMD-79-36 February 27, 1979

The ability by GAO to obtain information from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC) issue concerning the diversion of nuclear materials was reviewed.

FBI and CIA files on the NUMEC issue are vital to a complete investigation and in the opinion of GAO the CIA and FBI do not have authority to deny GAO access to their records, except with regard to unvouchered expenditures. However, no authority has been provided GAO at this time to compel disclosure of CIA or FBI records when such a request is denied.
