Nuclear Waste

Quarterly Report as of December 31, 1988 Gao ID: RCED-89-87 February 27, 1989

In response to a congressional request, GAO presented its quarterly report on the Department of Energy's (DOE) implementation of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982.

GAO found that: (1) DOE has completed a site characterization plan for the Yucca Mountain repository site and is in the process of obtaining public comments on the plan; (2) DOE delayed exploratory shaft construction for 5 months to reevaluate its completed design work and to ensure that its site characterization plan conformed with regulatory requirements; (3) the current DOE schedule for developing, implementing, and demonstrating the adequacy of its quality assurance program is slipping and could further delay construction work; and (4) if the Nuclear Regulatory Commission found the site characterization plan inadequate, DOE would have to request additional time to resolve the deficiencies, which would result in further construction delays.
