Availability of Nurse-Midwife Services Under Federal Health Care Programs

In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the availability of the services of nurse-midwives under various Federal health care programs.

GAO provided detailed information obtained in discussions with agency officials on the availability and use of nurse-midwives in these programs. Officials in each agency which GAO contacted generally supported the use of nurse-midwives. However, there is a general lack of utilization data, making it difficult to verify the use or evaluate Federal efforts to encourage the use of nurse-midwives.
