Distribution of Male and Female Employees in Four Federal Classification Systems

Gao ID: GGD-85-20 November 27, 1984

GAO presented data on the number and percent of male and female employees in the General Schedule (GS), the Federal Wage system (FWS), the classification used for foreign service professionals at the Department of State, and the system for classifying certain Veterans Administration medical professionals.

GAO noted that each of the occupational groups and families in the GS and FWS systems contains a number of occupational series which may vary substantially in their sex composition. Therefore, alternative groupings of occupations may result in somewhat different male and female distributions. The report also provided additional information related to the July 1984 GAO study describing these systems.
