Alternative Work Schedules for Federal Employees

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed federal employee and manager views on how alternative work schedules have affected government operations and employee job satisfaction.

GAO found that: (1) 74 percent of the employees indicated that the program should be continued; (2) 72 percent of the employees using alternative work schedules felt that the schedules gave greater flexibility to meet family obligations; (3) 74 percent of the employees believed the program has had a favorable effect on personnel morale; and (4) overall there have been improvements in the service to the public, efficiency of agency operations, and employment opportunities.
