This report, part of GAO's performance and accountability series, discusses the major management challenges and program risks facing the Social Security Administration (SSA). The challenges facing SSA include (1) improving research, evaluation, and policy development; (2) improving SSA's disability determination process; (3) sustaining management and oversight of long-standing, high-risk Supplemental Security Income issues; (4) addressing future service delivery issues; and (5) strengthening controls to protect SSA information.
