Food Stamp Program's Child Support Deduction Gao ID: OGC-97-1 October 31, 1996

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new rule on Food Stamp Program child support deductions. GAO found that: (1) the rule would add a deduction for household members who make legally obligated child support payments to or for an individual living outside of the household; (2) the deduction encourages payment of child support by increasing a household's food stamp allotment if a member is paying child support; and (3) USDA complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
