Government Property Disposition

Gao ID: GGD-96-10R December 15, 1995

Pursuant to a legislative mandate, GAO reviewed the feasibility of consolidating four federal property disposition programs into a single agency. GAO noted that: (1) impediments to consolidating the programs into one agency include conflicting legislative requirements, differing practices and procedures, and lack of support for making changes; (2) ongoing efforts to improve the coordination of federal property disposition activities within existing organizational structures include a governmentwide asset disposition project developed by the Treasury Department, the Housing Opportunity Hotline, and a clearinghouse; and (3) methods to improve cooperation and coordination in property dispositions include joint marketing and sale of properties, streamlining agencies' property disposition practices and procedures, and maintaining a central inventory of available properties that assist selling agencies and prospective purchasers.
