Postal Olympics Sponsorship

Gao ID: GGD-92-8R April 24, 1992

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided a status report on the Postal Service's (USPS) sponsorship of the 1992 Olympics. GAO found that: (1) the current USPS financial projection attributable to Olympic sponsorship is $169 million in revenues and $109 million in costs; (2) the primary sources of revenue are stamp retention and expedited mail revenue; and (3) it is difficult to exactly determine the costs of and revenues from the USPS sponsorship of the Olympics, since USPS would have conducted some of the activities even without such sponsorship.
