Royal Oak Tragedy

GAO provided information on the status of United States Postal Service's (USPS) management practices in Royal Oak, Michigan. GAO noted that: (1) USPS has conducted extensive interviews to identify underlying causes of work-place violence; (2) USPS appointed an acting manager/postmaster at Royal Oak to improve customer services and employee relations; (3) the Royal Oak post office continues to have problems regarding work schedules and customer service, but has improved the balance between operational efficiency and the treatment of customers and employees; and (4) widespread zip code changes in the Royal Oak area should improve customer service when the new zip codes are widely used.
